UWI Expands Caribbean AI Leadership Vision

Caribbean AI Institute Plans Gain Momentum

The University of the West Indies is intensifying its push into artificial intelligence and digital innovation as it seeks to strengthen the Caribbean’s role in the rapidly evolving global technology sector.

Hilary Beckles

Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles told the University Council on May 8 that the institution has entered what he described as a defining phase of development, aimed at reshaping its academic and operational systems while preparing regional societies for future economic and technological changes.

Delivering his annual report under the theme “Future Proofing UWI: Leading the Digital Revolution,” Beckles said the 2024 to 2025 academic year signalled a major period of transition for the regional institution.

He explained that The UWI intends to position itself as a leading centre for innovation and knowledge production within the Caribbean and internationally.

A key feature of the report was the university’s expanding work in artificial intelligence. Beckles highlighted the launch of the One UWI AI Research Cluster, regional AI conferences, and the completion of a policy framework designed to support ethical and inclusive use of emerging technologies.

He also revealed that plans are advancing for the establishment of the Caribbean’s first regional AI Institute. According to Beckles, the proposed institute is expected to support research, business development, education and job creation across high skilled sectors.

“The UWI is not simply keeping pace with technological change,” he said, adding that the university aims to shape the direction of digital transformation within the region.

Beckles also reflected on the 10th anniversary of the UWI China Institute of Information Technology in Suzhou, describing it as an important milestone in the university’s long term digital strategy. Established to strengthen expertise in software engineering, the joint BSc programme has contributed to the development of regional technology professionals.

Alongside its digital ambitions, the report reaffirmed The UWI’s commitment to climate resilience, sustainable development and social justice initiatives.

Beckles said the institution would continue building on the objectives outlined in its Triple A Strategy 2022 to 2027 through innovation, critical thinking and long term planning.
