Frustration is growing across Ajax and Durham Region after Durham Transit abruptly cancelled Route 920, a critical lifeline for commuters travelling between Oshawa and Scarborough Town Centre. The route, known for its consistently high ridership, offered vital links to Toronto’s subway and bus networks and significantly cut commute times for thousands.

“For years, the 920 saved me 30 minutes each way,” said one Ajax rider. “I could leave downtown Toronto and be home in Ajax in under 75 minutes. It was a godsend.”

The introduction of the 921 Express, which bypasses all Ajax stops between Oshawa and Brock Road in Pickering, has left many scrambling. Riders report chaotic conditions and unsafe situations, including children stranded for hours. “The cancellation of the 920 has effectively boycotted Ajax commuters,” said another rider. “The 921 runs nearly empty between Oshawa and Pickering, while former 920 riders face multiple transfers and longer travel times.”

Community members are demanding an urgent review. They propose reinstating the 920 as a local service and maintaining the 921 as a true express option. Calls for weekend service have also increased, citing the underutilized 900 route, which currently ends at the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.

“This was Durham Transit’s most successful route, and instead of building on that, they removed it,” a rider commented. A petition is already circulating among affected commuters.

As of press time, Durham Transit has not released an official statement regarding the community’s concerns.
