Friends of Fortis 5K Run Walk Supports Students

Friends of Fortis Run/Walk to support student welfare in Jamaica

Chris Campbell

The annual Friends of Fortis Fundraising 5K Run/Walk will take place on Sunday, August 17, at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, bringing together community members, alumni, and supporters to raise funds for student welfare initiatives.

Organized in collaboration with Dance Immersion, United Achievers, Women of PACE, and the Congress of Black Women of Brampton, the event will support a range of programs for students, including scholarships for post-secondary education, access to dental care, and meal assistance for those in need.

Talking to Alex Francis, he explained, “We’re committed to improving student welfare and well-being,” organizers said. “Dental care, in particular, is a hidden but pressing issue for students, especially in Jamaica, where some young people endure severe dental problems that affect their daily lives and learning.”

Friends of Fortis, a group that includes alumni and community partners, has a long history of charitable work. From 2013 to 2015, the group raised funds for Kingston College in Jamaica, providing free dental care to students and contributing to the Roger McTair Filmmakers Award at Toronto Metropolitan University. This year, the group is also working alongside a UK chapter of Kingston College alumni, marking the school’s centenary celebrations.

The run/walk is open to the public, with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the event starting at 9:00 a.m. Participants will enjoy added perks such as free chiropractic care from students at the Canadian Metropolitan Chiropractic College.

Special guests and notable alumni will be on hand, including individuals who have made significant cultural contributions, such as championing the preservation of the traditional Jamaican patty name, a story featured in the documentary Patty Wars. Chris Campbell will serve as patron of the walk, and a community barbecue will follow the event.

“Expect to see familiar faces, inspiring stories, and a lot of community spirit,” Francis said.
